Litter Box Training 101: Because Every Bunny Poops

Image
So today Mom stumbled across a Facebook post in one of her rabbit groups that made her sad (and almost got me a sister). Basically, this family was giving up their bunny (an adorable Holland lop) because they said she was making their house smell because she "couldn't" be litter box trained. They thought she would be better with someone who could let her be an "outdoor" bunny. The rabbit was only 12 weeks old, so she was just a baby! This is what really annoyed Mommy, because they could not have possibly had that bunny for more than four weeks at the most. You can hardly expect a baby bunny to become perfectly trained in four weeks when they are still a baby! So after I reminded Mommy that she really can't get me a sibling because she can't afford to feed two of us and she doesn't have the space to give us BOTH proper homes (that and I'm a bit territorial... I growl at new humans she brings home, even though I happily eat treats from them and wi...

Happy National Bunny Day Video from Winston the Super Lop!

Since today is National Bunny Day I wanted to share a video my Mom made for me. We really are best buddies :-)

You might be a Bunny Mom if.... SALAD EDITION!

Image
When you are a bunny, you know your leafy greens. I'm a big boy, so my Mommy likes to give me a salad in the morning, one in the evening, and one before bed. So each day I get about three cups of salad that is greens recommended by my vet. As such, we're somewhat experts in lettuce in this house. So we decided to write this post about lettuce and how you know you are a bunny mom based on your grocery store habits.  You might be a bunny mom if... 1) You get annoyed when the lettuce at the grocery store looks bad. Ordinarily my Mom gets her groceries from Amazon Fresh because there's a pandemic and she's a busy lady. Normally, it's fine. But the other day they sent us some wilted and dead looking red leaf lettuce and Mommy got SO MAD. I think she actually went online and complained.  2) You get really excited over giant heads of bok choy. So one day we only needed my greens, so Mommy ventured to the actual grocery store and Giant had HUGE heads of bok choy. All of t...

Bunny Videos

Image
So I wanted to share some videos my Mommy made of me lately. I think it really shows how much I love food and what a good boy I am! The first one is me clicker training. It's not a perfect session. I had to go to the potty in the middle (though I DID use my box like a good boy!) But it's a good video because I'm learning a new trick so it shows how I learn. I'm a pretty good student, if I do say so myself! The second one is Mommy filming us playing with my treat board. I LOVE dried pineapple and am determined to eat all of it!

"Non-Bunny" Bunny Products That We Love!

Image
One of the hardest things about being a bunny is that a lot of the things that are marketed and made for bunnies are NOT actually good for bunnies. To make things even MORE complicated, I'm a big bunny. The last time my Mommy weighed me I was nine pounds and counting. So those little cute things made for a little two pound Netherland dwarf rabbit are going to be WAY too small for me. Therefore, my Mommy has to get creative in her bunny shopping. Here are some "non-bunny" products that we love. 1) Kitty Litter Boxes. The littler boxes marketed for bunnies are WAY WAY WAY too little. A lot of people get these little corner boxes to sit in our enclosures and while they look like a good idea, there are a lot of problems with them. We need room to make a complete 360 turn, and we like to eat while we go potty (who doesn't?) so something this small simply won't do. There's no room for hay, and it's generally a good idea to put the hay directly in the box. We r...

Clicker Training 101

Image
One of my favorite things to do is to clicker train with my Mommy. Whenever I come downstairs to play each day the first thing I do is run into the kitchen and wait for my training. I get to learn fun things and get lots of treats for being such a talented bunny! So today I want to share a little bit about clicker training because it's easy and fun and something that any bunny mommy or daddy can do to play with their rabbit. (Eagerly waiting for Mommy to start our training session.... sometimes I make it hard because I hop around her feet the entire time she's setting up!) Why clicker training, you ask?  We bunnies are actually super smart and we need a challenge! Because we're little, because tend to underestimate us, but we can learn tricks just like dogs or any other animal. Clicker training is a great way to give us exercise, stimulate our brains, and bond with us! It rewards us for good behavior, and once we learn some basics, it can be used to help us get over some of...

"Bunny Pandemic": RHDV2

Image
So while all the humans are worrying about their own people pandemic, most don't realize that there is a bunny pandemic going on too. Ok, so it's not really  a pandemic I guess, but it's a pretty scary outbreak of a fatal, highly contagious disease for bunnies (don't worry, it doesn't infect humans, so you're probably safe, unless you are also a bunny). Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (whew, that's a mouthful, thankfully it's known as RHDV, that is MUCH easier to say) has been around for a while. It started with bunnies that were imported to China from Europe in the 80s, and a new strand, RHDV2, was found in Europe ten years ago. However, it's never been detected in North America, until 2020. This year, there's been an outbreak, starting with wild rabbits in the Southwest and spreading into the domesticated population out West. It's highly contagious, and lately there's been a small outbreak at a vet office in New York. It's got a pr...
