Winston the Super Lop

One of my favorite things to do is to clicker train with my Mommy. Whenever I come downstairs to play each day the first thing I do is run into the kitchen and wait for my training. I get to learn fun things and get lots of treats for being such a talented bunny! So today I want to share a little bit about clicker training because it's easy and fun and something that any bunny mommy or daddy can do to play with their rabbit. (Eagerly waiting for Mommy to start our training session.... sometimes I make it hard because I hop around her feet the entire time she's setting up!) So while all the humans are worrying about their own people pandemic, most don't realize that there is a bunny pandemic going on too. Ok, so it's not really  a pandemic I guess, but it's a pretty scary outbreak of a fatal, highly contagious disease for bunnies (don't worry, it doesn't infect humans, so you're probably safe, unless you are also a bunny). Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (whew, that's a mouthful, thankfully it's known as RHDV, that is MUCH easier to say) has been around for a while. It started with bunnies that were imported to China from Europe in the 80s, and a new strand, RHDV2, was found in Europe ten years ago. However, it's never been detected in North America, until 2020. This year, there's been an outbreak, starting with wild rabbits in the Southwest and spreading into the domesticated population out West. So on Friday Mommy had a plumber come by to fix something in her bathroom (because she's a silly human who doesn't just lick herself clean like I do...) and he said something that really got my ears in a knot. He asked my Mom why she didn't just get a cat or a dog instead of ME. Can you believe that?? I'm sure he didn't mean anything by it, he was a very nice man, but goodness, I was a bit insulted by the insinuation that a dog or a cat would be better than me! So I decided to write this post explaining why bunnies are so awesome. 1) Bunnies are super social! Now, I've heard plenty of people tell my Mom about a mean bunny they had, and when Mom was a little human she had a bunny named Pepper who wasn't nearly as sweet as me. There's bad apples in every species I guess, but most bunnies, if given a chance we are VERY social! Welcome! My name is Winston C. Wabbit. I was born on February 14th, 2020 on a farm in Pennsylvania. I'm an English Lop, which is a special breed of bunny because I have loooooong ears and am quite big. I'm not a giant though, so I'm not sure why everyone who meets me has to exclaim about how big I am. My Mommy tells me that  a long long time ago people in England created us to be a "fancy" breed of bunny, so we were always bred to be housepets, which might explain why I'm so sweet and kind of lazy.  I met my Mommy of May 2nd (I was her birthday present to herself!). She fell in love with my breed of bunny for our ears, and started looking for places that had English Lops, saying that if it was meant to be, there would be an available litter in her area.
